Novel Methods and Tools for Enhanced Intraoperative Guidance

Submission Deadline: January 31, 2027Contribute to this Special Topic

Advances in bioengineering are driving the development of innovative technologies that support surgical procedures and improve postoperative patient management. Novel sensing platforms and control algorithms, imaging techniques, digital twins, smart devices, and computational tools are enabling more effective real-time intraoperative guidance while providing continuous monitoring of physiological/device status and early detection/treatment of potential complications.

This Special Topic aims to highlight scientific contributions and cutting-edge engineering methods that can be deployed intraoperatively to improve surgical outcome. We welcome contributions on intraoperative imaging, surgical navigation, optical, ultrasound, bio-impedance, biosensors or other intra-operative sensing modalities, smart surgical instruments, AI-assisted decision support, patient-specific digital twins, and multimodal data integration. We also encourage submissions on implantable and wearable sensors, remote patient monitoring, bioelectronic devices, digital health platforms, and intelligent systems.
Studies describing novel device designs, fabrication, proof-of-concept validation, preclinical or clinical evaluation, and translational approaches are particularly encouraged. This Special Topic seeks to bring together engineers, clinicians, and scientists developing next-generation technologies that enhance clinical precision and improve patient outcomes.

Topics covered include, but are not limited to:

  • Advanced Intraoperative Imaging and Image-Guided Surgery
  • Real-Time Intraoperative Bio-, Physiological, Proprioceptive and Exteroceptive Sensing
  • Implantable and Wearable Sensors for (Remote) Patient Monitoring
  • Smart Materials and Intrinsic Actuation Paradigms
  • Flexible/Steerable/Continuum Surgical Devices
  • Robot-Assisted Surgery, Surgical Navigation, Augmented / Mixed Reality
  • Multimodal Data Integration, Sensor-Fusion and Computational Tools
  • Digital Twins for Surgical Planning and Intraoperative Decision Support
  • Physical AI for Surgical or Interventional Planning and Control
  • Deep Reasoning, Deep Abstraction, Deep Planning
  • Surgical or Interventional Datasets
